Ferdinand Lured by Ariel by John Everett Millais |
|
|
| Painted in 1849 this is one of the very greatest of the early paintings. The subject comes from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, with the sprite Ariel leading Ferdinand to his master Prospero. The quality and detail of the painting of the grass and vegetation is difficult to credit, as is the painting of Ferdinand’s face and his clothing. The paining also creates a most mysterious and intriguing image. |
