The Bride of Lamamoor by John Everett Millais

This picture was painted in 1878by the mature artist well after his great Pre-Raphaelite phase. It is based on the story by Sir Walter Scott, whose Scottish historical novels so appealed to men of Millais generation. Edgar, Master of Ravenswood has rescued Lucy Ashton, the daughter of his enemy from a rampaging bull. The background is not as detailed as in his earlier phase, but is still skillfully done. The facial features of the couple are very striking, and they seem to stand out from the picture.
