Victorian Art in Britain

The Last Chapter by Robert Braithwaite Martineau

Martineau was a friend of, and was strongly influenced by Holman Hunt. He was a slow, deliberate, conscientious worker, and this combined with his early death means that his output was small. This picture says much about Victorian family life, particularly the role of women. The young women, safe, secure and protected, is finishing her novel in the light of the fireside glow. Outside, through the window, can be seen the wider and more perilous world. The picture itself, the young woman, her clothing, andthe glow of the fire are all very well-done.
