Victorian Art in Britain

The Fisherman and the Siren by Lord Leighton

This is an early (1858) picture of Leighton's, and the subject, beloved of Victorian painters, is of a man being lured to his death by a siren. This picture is based on a poem by Goethe, whose work Leighton would have learned about from his time in Germany as a youth. Throughout his life he painted nudes, but this picture is the most sensual and erotic of all of them. This picture alone is worth the visit to Bristol.
