The Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle was founded in 1901 (opened 1904) by Alexander Laing a Scottish wine and spirit merchant. It is the North East's principal gallery and is of Baroque style with Art Nouveau detailing. The gallery holds a particularly good 18th- and 19th- century British collection, including paintings by the locally born Romantic painter John Martin.
