Unconscious Rivals by Lawrence Alma Tadema |
|
|
| Throughout most of his life Alma Tadema had a tremendous work rate. It
was not unknown for him to produce twenty substantial paintings in a
year. In the early 1890s as he approached his sixties, his work rate declined. He was rich, hence no
longer in need of money, and perhaps had less energy than in his earlier
life. The two ladies are on shaded balcony, it is obviously very hot.
There is a large colourful plant in a tub. They are awaiting the same
lover. In reality it is a highly competent late(1893) Alma-Tadema, and is purely
decorative.
