Hylas and the Nymphs by J W Waterhouse |
|
|
| Painted
in 1896 this is one of the definitive Waterhouse pictures. It was shown
at the Royal Academy in 1897. This beautiful painting is another variation
on the’ femme fatale,’ theme so attractive to Victorian artists and
public. The combination of the aesthetic beauty of the painting and
the threat to the life of Hylas is a most striking image.
