| This late picture(1913) by the seventy seven year old
artist was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1913. By this time Poynter
had been President of the Academy for seventeen years, and was a living
anachronism, and reactionary. The sleeping Endymion is approached, in
his dreams, by Diana the Moon Godess whom he loves. The whole of the
background of the picture is painted in dark shades of blue, and is very
effective. Diana herself is loosely painted, and rather impressionistic.
She is not as erotica as some of Poynter’s earlier nudes. It is,
though, a highly attractive painting. |
