Victorian Art in Britain

Sir Isumbras at the Ford by John Everett Millais

The picture was condemned by Ruskin, and famously parodied by Sandys. Millais experienced problems with this canvass. He, twice, repainted the horse being unhappy with its size. Having seen the picture recently, it still makes a lasting impression, faults and all. The powerful colours, and the subtlety of the overcast, menacing background and the brilliance of the painting of the aged knight all command attention.
