Victorian Art in Britain

Night With Her Train of Stars by Edward Hughes

Edward Hughes was the nephew of Arthur Hughes, who initially trained him before he entered the Royal Academy Schools. He was also a studio assistant to Holman Hunt, in his old age. He seems to have been a self-effacing character like his uncle. He usually worked in watercolour, which he did in this, his masterpiece. This symbolist work as characteristic of the painter at his very best. It is, with it’s muted subtly toned, blue colouring, angel, & poppies symbolic of death.
