Victorian Art in Britain

 Amy by Arthur Hughes

This small early painting dates from around the same time as 'The Long Engagement.' The picture is painted with all the delicacy of Hughes early, and best phase. It is one of the great tragedies of 19th century art that he was unable to maintain this standard for very long. The mauves and greens predominate as usual. A small jewel, but a jewel non-the-less.
