Leeds City Art Gallery was built in 1887 with funds raised from the public and was opened to the public by the Lord Mayor, Aldermann Scarr, and Professor Hubert Von Herkomer, in October 1888. It now houses an outstanding collection of English watercolours; fine Victorian academic and Pre-Raphaelite painting; late 19th century French pictures and provides "probably the best collection of 20th century British art outside London" (The Times) 
The gallery is situated in the city centre next to the Town Hall.
