This picture, painted in 1895 remains the painter’s best known work. It is brightly coloured, & highly detailed, & the model looks directly at the viewer. As became a religious single woman, the picture lacks any sensuousness, & sexual undertones. The use of the mirror, cleverly creates space in what is otherwise a densely packed picture. This is, many years after the dissolution of the PRB, a painting showing all their hallmarks
