1850 -1909
| Edward John Gregory was born in 1850 in Southampton. For a time he worked in the drawing office of a steamship company but left for London in 1869 after befriending fellow artist Herbert von Herkomer. Though Gregory was a mainly self taught artist he attended the RCA and the Royal Academy Schools for a short period. Gregory's subjects consisted mostly of street scenes and city life and after a visit to Italy he produced a series on Venice. Gregory exhibited at the RA throughout his career and was President between 1898-1909. In 1883 he was elected ARA and RA in 1898. He died in Marlow, Buckinghamshire in 1909. |
