In the fast paced world we live in, there are some things which end up falling by the wayside. As we grow up we learn to focus on work and making money and making sure that we have enough money to retire, and yet when we are younger we are still able to see the wonder in everything around us.
This is something that we need to recapture, and one way to do this is through art. As children one of the first things we are encouraged to do is draw. First we colour in shapes that are pre-drawn. Pictures of princesses and trees, but then we are encouraged to use our imaginations and learn to colour outside of the lines.
We are encouraged to draw things from our own imaginations, perhaps a family of Bed bugs and a family of elephants roaming the plains of Africa. When we are children we are taught that art is something fun and wonderful.
But the moment we get a bit older we are taught that art doesn't matter and that we should focus on more 'realistic' pursuits. But now that we are older, perhaps we can look back and realise how important art is.
Art is important for development but also for self expression. Why go to therapy when you can paint a picture instead?
